restoring fish color

I read in an artical a while ago about the use of salt to bring out the color again in a dead fish.Can anyone tell me more about that.I just did a search for it but couldnt find what I was looking for.Maybe I didnt type the right search words.thanks

Borax actually will do so too...

Not sure about the salt but if you take a soft bristled brush and some powdered borax and rub head to tail, sometimes you can liven up the colors a bit. Pretty much a waste of time though imho because 99% of the color fades out after drying anyway...

Unless you remove it from the skin completely, you can end up with problems. It will not do squat to "retain color." It can act as a sponge for water vapor. Ever swim in salt water and try drying out your clothes in a humid environment? The terms is "hygroscopic" and salt will draw moisture out of the air and into your mount if it is humid. It also interacts less than favorably with some preservative solutions and possibly even paints.
