I make articles of clothing out of hair-on cowhides and am looking
for a way to dehair the cowhides for an interesting look. Is there
an acid or alkaline I can springle to get the effect?

Dehairing is a part of the tanning process. A special type of lime is used to soak the cured hides in. After that, the hides are then delimed to rid them of the excess lime and to prep them for tanning. To dehair them after tanning you are stuck with using a razor!
