Hog mount Stinks!

I'm interested in mounting a respectable size hog to
add to my collection. A buddy who is a respected taxi.
had a big hog he just finished ready to send out
that looked great but that thing stunk.
I'm worried about having to stay in the same room with
that. I know those old boars are nasty before being tanned but, dang... Is there a trick to neutralize that rank funk?

Your friend didn't degrease that hog well enough then

I can't imagine sending out a mount that stinks. I'd almost bet you that he never shaved the skin enough, didn't degrease it enough, and possibly used dry preservative on it. Any one of those three would do it alone and in concert can make the customer find someone else to do his work next time.

It was a big cinnaman colored hog and it had
a greasy sheen to the hair, hence no degreaser?
I'm almost positive he sent the hide out to be tanned but
not sure if it was dry tanned. What did you mean about 'shaved the skin'? I can only assume the (interior)flesh side. I have seen
some hog hides back from the tanner wet and they were so closely fleshed you could see the hair root on the underside.
I'm obviously new at this but wanted to learn enough to at least
mount my own deer, coyotes and hogs.

Thanks,
Robert

That's what I meant Robert

Lazy taxidermists will leave the shield as it's tough to shave off. Still, it HAS to be removed completely just as you described.
