Back 30years ago when I did DP work, I had a guy come in with his first bear. At that time, I was getting $750 for a lifesize in a box diorama. He said he couldn't afford that and wanted to know why so high. I told him I had all bears tanned commercially. He then asked me why I didn't do it with "that powder". I told him that it would leave the hide oily. He said if I'd do it for $300 that way, he'd pay me in cash and never say a word if it did. Well, I'm a sucker so I bit. He came buy really pleased and then he brought in 3000 pennies to pay me with. I asked what the hell that was, and he said that was $300 and it was all he had saved over the years. Well, I took it.

A month later, I get a call from his WIFE. She's hot. The bear "stinks" and she wants her money back. I tell her what transpired but she still wants her money back and that I should "come by and smell this thing". I went and there, in a 10x12 west facing living room with a HUGE picture window sets that bear in an un-air conditioned room. It smells like bear grease. My customer? Oh he's standing behind the wife as she raises hell. I tell her again that he wanted a deal. She demands money. I told her that I'd only return half what he'd paid and she agreed. I went out to the car and got her the bag of 1500 pennies. I told him never to come back to my shop ever and I've NEVER, EVER kept a bear in the shop. They ALL go out without exception.

...You were way to easy, I'd never have given them a penny back! And you probably pissed off the "wonder dusters" by telling that story.

Kim, back in '97, the Red River flooded big time. A friend of mine in Grand Forks ended up with a shop full of trophies from his customers that suffered flood damage. We got together for a week of cleaning to get his shop back on line. We washed everything! And some of the mounts were quite old, being the laminated paper forms. All were shampooed, rinsed and dried with air, before they were set out in the sun. the only mounts lost had been soaking in flood water for days before they were rescued and brought in. Your bear should be a "piece of cake".

Who am I to question the story

It IS a great story - except one aspect of it. Every time I count out 3000 pennies, it only come to $30.00. What math did they use 30 years ago?

Uh Stephen

I know there are gas shortages in someplaces today, but I didn't realize Pennsylvania had a run on coin wrappers. I wasn't required to do the big math jobs. After all, I is a TAXIDERMIST ain't I?

I just want you to feel appreciated

Ever since I was a kid I always look too analytically at everything I read. I should not have pointed it out, but it is an old habit going on 52 years since I criticized my mother for not giving quality milk at the ripe old age of a couple days days. I'll try to keep my mouth shut.
