I had a hunter from out of state come to my studio today and was wondering about shipping cost. He wants his wild turkey done and ship his mount from here in KS to florida. I have not had to ship out of state yet, is it expensive? What shipping company should I use, ups or fedex or what, I really appreciate the help and thanks.

From different companies, UPS, FedEx, DHL, and don't be afraid to get quotes from some of the LTL freight companies as well. I work for a trucking company, and we haul quite a few mounts each year.

have shipped rougly 60 mounts int he last 9 months and had one fox ear damaged - that wasnt dhl's fault - the fox was packed in a box too small for mount - they come to my door(in the country and pickup whenever i need them)- ups is out of site expensive unless you are under contract with them

Size does matter

Both UPS & FEDX Have size limits on packages. Last I knew UPS accepted a larger size Box with a turkey mount that will matter.

Fed Ex takes the larger box size...

Fed Ex will ship a 40 X 30 X 30 box, you try and run that box thru UPS and it always get declined here. I can ship most white-tail and smaller Mulies in that box, it's availiable thru uline. It's a triple corrugated box that is very tough, with just a little help with some 2X2 stripping to reinforce the lid it's ready to go. I recommend stretch wrapping around the lid as they tend to use it for a handle. I also staple and hot glue the lid to the 2 X 2 stripping. Cost for shipping that box anywhere in the lower 48 runs about $85, the box is around $25, then I add another $10 for the added wood and stretch wrap. Anything larger than that I ship Central Freight.

I just shipped...

HI,

I just shipped a large whitetail shoulder mount from where I live in Central Illinois to Eastern New York. I made the crate which was
48 x 27 x 27. Weight was about 83 pounds. I used FedEx Ground. The cost was $90. I got there in 3 days.

In my experience - For the heavy stuff, FedEx Ground is always cheaper than UPS. I sell a lot of different stuff on Ebay and when it goes heavy I use FedEx Ground.

Hope this helps. Mark
