after you salt the deer cape do you put in the frig. for 24 hrs. and then salt it the next day and frig. it again? and after that you rehydrate it after the 2nd 24 hrs. then ready for the tan right. I'm just starting out and I need to get my ducks in a row on the tanning process. Please send steps on the process.

you put the salt on the next day change the salt out and put more on. You want to dry the hide out til it is hard.Depending on what you are tanning with you dont even have to dry salt.

I'm going to try the Krowtann 2000 on tanning. Looks like I'll salt 2 times and get it hard and then soak it in a salt brine w/bactracide and kemsol 4 to relax for 45 to an hour. Drip dry it and put it in the krowtann for 4-5 days, after that I'll rehydrate it again for a short time. Should I oil it with krowoil or not? After this it should be ready to put on the form, right? Also I'm doing some studying with Sallie Dahmes Whitetail/Mule Deer book and her video, give me some feed back on her if ya'll don't mind
if your going to Krowtann it there is no need to salt dry, just rough flesh, turn the ears split the lips and eyes and into the Krowtann it goes.
i believe they dont recommend salting first
i had a conversation a week back or so about a elk
they told me it would be better to just rough flesh and follow directions

Thanks Paul I will call them in the morning to get the low down. One other thing, after tanning and neautralizing could you possibly oil it with a tanning oil to get that soft feel or will it already have that soft feel. I'm just trying to get a good receipe going here for tanning the hide. I'm just a beginner but I plan on bring a lot of heat to the locals here, and hopefully to the compeitive level one day. I HAVE A FIRE BURNING FOR THIS THING I CALL WIDELIFE ART! THANKS
when i called they said i didnt need to oil but i would get extra stretch if i did
i used the krow oil and i did get extra stretch and a good outcome
i believe they have a whitetail formula now that is i guess a little better?
i dont know i havnt tried it
make sure if you use it to follow directions exactly
what i mean is you have to take the skin one or two times a day out of the pickle/tan and stretch it and stir the solution that is critical to good outcome
but chris i believe you posted you were a beginner well
if i were you i would start any project with stop-rot up front
use as directed and it will give you the time you need to flesh well
and i like the rub on tan JRTS
ESPECIALLY FOR A BEGINNER
i pickle suspect capes and i dont pickle fresh capes
email me for a few more details if you would like to know more on the jrts
also look on the site www.hidetanning.net
good reading for any experiance level
