I used clay in the back of the eye and pushed it in the deer form. Then today one fell out. In the tape I have that is all he does to keep the eye there but I have broken 2 eyes now. Do I have to put them in right before I put the cape on?

If you are using potters clay, then you need to keep it wet until you put the skin on!
If you want to set your eyes a day early then lay a piece of wet paper towel over the clay work and then staple plastic (like a grocery bag) over that to keep the moisture in.
Pull when ready to mount cape.
Scatch up the foam in the socket so the clay can STICK to it
And put in your eyelid clay They should not fall out.
You set and clay your eyes immediately before mounting.
I throw an old towel on the floor beneath my mounting stand, or a piece of cardboard, to catch glass eyes if I drop them, which I occasionally do. I have never broke one, but one got scratched from hitting the floor one time, and that is why I take this precaution.
Rick Carter had a good article in the currrent issue of breaktrough
about setting eyes
he used what i like to use
hot glue
i also use critter clay
but the hot glue is real handy to keep those peepers from making you do airobics every time you touch or shake the form
I also take a phillips screwdriver and push some holes into the eyesocket on the form. I then push clay into these holes and that helps hold the eye in place. I don't think I ever had one fall out using this method. I use critter clay and pack the back of the eye flush and then press the two surfaces together.
I hate hot glue with a passion only because it is sneaky and I've gotten bit a few times pretty good. Them burns last for days.
