Did I screw up?

Submitted by swampfoot on 5/29/06 at 5:16 PM. ( ) 68.119.217.197

I am new to tanning, I caped out 2 frozen deer yesterday, turned them ,rough fleshed them and threw them in pickle. For some reason I was thinking I didnt need to salt them if they were going straight into pickle same day. Did I mess up? If so do I need to get them out and freeze them or leave them alone. I am going to finish fleshing and put on JRTS when they come out. Help

Should be no problem

There are two schools of thought on this. Some dont salt first. Most probably do. You should be fine. I have done it both ways with good results.

Keep

a close eye on the pH. With extra "fluids" not removed from not salting, the pickle will have to work harder killing bacteria. May need to add more acid to keep the pH low.

Ask George

George could probably tell you anything you want to know about JRTS. I know he dosn't use the pickle, says the tan works better without it. I have tried JRTS to and didn't use the pickle and you wouldn't believe the stretch you get with it, that stuff is awsome! I know your supposed to salt overnight with it though, using the pickle might be different, read the bottle and see what it says. Tried reading mine but I have such a god awful head ache right now I can't understand it. Good luck!

swampfoot youll probably be ok but

next time salt overnight
now i know ive read George saying salt till it quits dripping

now did you use stop-rot
even salting overnight i would not skip it it helps you with the time you need and also with the color loss of the epidermis

now you can soak in a brine with leatherizing acid at a ph of 5.5 to 6 and skip the salt but i would not recommend it for a beginner
if your just a little off with recognising what stage the skin is in
your playing with fire
although with the stop-rot,acid/brine/jrts youll get more stretch than you have ever seen
with the exception of some cool stuff Glen is playing with
