...if there was a
wild turkey
green head mallard
bob cat
coyote
and several deer
in the freezer all gifts to be practiced on.

Just ID the animal with the giver's name? or what? NC

if you applied for the NC

taxidermy permit, they should have included the state regs as they apply for the keeping of logs (including providing the latest logsheet).

I have called the wardens for clarifications as through reading the regs, there are one or two contradictions in them...

many of my questions applied to the keeping of roadkill specimens for practice, but call the local wardens and ask for your specific concerns. you are allowed alot of leeway as a licensed taxidermist (regardless of skill level, it allows you to keep specimens) but it also puts you on their radar and they can (and will) eventualy knock on your door. I have been waiting on thier return as I was deployed to W Iraq when they came knocking at about 830-9 pm and scared the mess out of my wife.

apply for the permit, and then call them and ask your questions. they shouyld be able to decipher the legalese jargon in the regs for you

where in NC are you located? I am in Chinquapin... just outside of J-ville.

That varies from state to state...

For a beginner, I think that the possession limit specified on your hunting license would protect you, as long as these are legally taken specimens. For a professional, in my state, there is an annual taxidermy permit ($10.00 cost) that allows one to possess over and above the possession limits of your hunting license. I purchase a hunting/fishing license for each of my boys, even though they do not hunt or fish anymore. I feel this protects us when they are picking up and delivering specimens. I tag everything with name, date, and of course what type of specimen is in the bag.

good luck! I have found the NC Wildlife to be the strangest thing I have ever had to deal with. My local officer says, "as long as they are gifted to you and documented as such your OK". But I have friends that were fined for having their own ducks in their freezers for not having a Federal License, being told by the game officer "I don't care whose ducks they are, if you're going to have ducks, you better have a Federal license". The laws are generally vague and open to interpretation by the local officer. Your best bet is to call your local officer and ask, but again good luck I've tried for 2 years to get my local officer to come by and talk but he has never stopped by or even checked me. Just make sure that you have your license. And when loggin them in, make sure they are marked on your log sheet as gifted and they are signed over as such. If you have any questions e-mail me and I will help out the best I can.

Greg, that's not quite true

The FEDERAL law is quite specific with the 50 CFR series of regulations. For waterfowl, it explicitly states that if the specimen belong to you and you are doing them for yourself, no permit is required. We covered that a few months back in great detail with a local bunny cop confiscated a man's ducks under that same premise. Final outcome, birds returned, ticket forgotten, and a lame apology given.

I agree...

That is exactly what the law reads but this is what they were told. I'm sure they could of made an issue out of it. I am just telling him to call his local officer, no harm no foul.

I too have called my local officer several times and left messages for him. I have never received a return call. I have several questions to ask. The laws they sent me on paper with my license were VERY vague to say the least. It was about depratory (sp?) laws, I think (ie..farmers killing animals eating crops) Go figure.
