Clarification on using Bondo for ears

Submitted by bob on 7/13/06 at 12:34 PM. ( bob.heinisch@msfc.nasa.gov ) 128.158.140.96

I recently went to a seminar and watched the bondo method for W/T deer ears. I cannot remember if the instructor removed the cartilage or not. I want to give the bondo method a try. Should the cartilage remain or be removed?

Thanks,
Bob

"Remain"

The cartlidge remains and for best results you need to "rough up" both sides of the ear. I use my wire wheel and have great results. I have been hearing alot of good things about ear magic and I believe I may try it next deer season.

Remove it

For best result, thinner ear, better bond to skin.
Use long strand fiberglass bondo.
basic bondo is worthless not tacky enough

Bondo Works Great

Even with this being my first year in taxidermy I use the bondo method with great results. I leave the cartilage in place. However I do use a wire wheel on the ears prior to bondo to rough up. However I use the celastic ear liners. Bondo won't bond to the plastic earliners. Hope this helps.

oh boy!

To those of us who use liners, we dont use bondo because it looks too thick to us. So, using bondo AND cartilage is thick enough, but to use bondo, cartilage AND celastic? Wow, I dont know...I know you should use whats best for you, but I would suggest trying just liners, you might like the results better.
