Boy do I have a problem. Pulled a Deer hide out of Freezer to work on. I was going to leave free on to make cape but it was of my skinning and hadn't been froze quilcky . The hair started slipping ofter pickle so I started to remove the rest of the hair. I had a few spots where the hair won't come off so I limes it. Meant to get it out of the lime water the next day but had to leave it sit for 4 days as had emergency come up. When I took it out of the lime water it was like rubber and had shrunk. Can I save the hide? it is now thicker and no long my soft deer hide for drum skin. it is more like a rubber boot. I have strechers it out and scaped but I 'm not having much success.

Took a deer hide out to work on . after I pickled it (foLlowing Rittel eZ100 directions) the hair came off in handfulls. I decided to go with the flow and just make leather for drum skin. the hair wouldn't all come off so I put the hide in lime water to remove the rest of the hair. I was going to have the hide in the lime water overnight but I got called away on an emergency and didn't return for 4 days. when I pulled the hide it was like rubber. the hide had shrunk to 1/2 the size and was like a rubber boot. is there any way I can save the hide. I have it on a board nailed down and have been scaping it

I'm no expert but

#1 the hide developed hair slip, #2 you put it in lime water, #3 it was left four days longer than intended ='s #4 your current outcome. Now understand, I'm not trying to be derogatory about your results. Prior self-education / research and diligence IS A MUST with every project, especially as a beginner. Most people don't understand that there isn't much difference in cost between a quality taxidermy school or learning on your own PROPERLY. In the end, one just takes longer than the other. There may be someone out there that can give you advise on a magic save for your rubber boot, but it sounds like a decent burial is in order. There are so many variables that could have started the hair slip before you ever began the pickle process. A good step-by-step account can only be answered by you. Re-review the pickle process, and keep in mind that the devil can lay in the details - meaning the most minor over- site can have disasterous effects. Next, use the orange button to your left [search] and review all of the archives on hair slip. Then don't procrastinate, move forward with your next project.
