Bird Flesher Problem

Submitted by Curtis on 8/5/06 at 2:21 PM. ( ) 71.213.112.240

I just bought a new bird flesher from Van Dykes. The flesher came with a fine wire flesher. The thing is just tearing my birds apart. It works but I can bearly touch the bird to the wheel and have to be very careful. I can't use any sweeping motion or apply any pressure at all. I ran a screwdriver under the wheel for about an half hour to try and soften the bristles but is still just rips the skin. The instructions recomended using two brushes so I ordered another wheel. How do you double the wire wheel? Will this help or is there anything else I can do. I beleive the flesher is called the new angled flesher.

Use a rasp

And hold that under the wheel, I don't know if a screw driver would work or not. I just put a wire wheel on a bech grinder and that works great for me. You really don't need to apply pressure at all, just barely touch it to the wheel and keep moving it and the fat just melts right off. i would try a rasp or piece of wood though to shorten any stray bristles.

rasp on mine also. You can also try a block of wood.
Another thing, make sure it is spinning smoothly, not "bouncing". When I got mine from Van Dyke's, the wire wheel that came with mine wasn't centered accuratley, so as it turned, it bounced (out of balance/round). Also had to build a better frame, it wasn't stable enough, the whole thing would move somewhat during use. BP

Water?

Are you spraying water on it? I keep a mist bottle by my side and do little by little with a very soft touch. If the skin is dry it seems to catch easier and rip.
