was wondering how to set antlers. What is the proper distance between the antler base and eyes.

Prep the cape, then test fit the cape over the face of the form. line up the eyes nose etc, then lay the flap over the skull plate, and test to see if the leather goes all the way to the burrs. Adjust distance accordingly.
The proper distance can be set by temporarily attaching antlers or have someone hold in place then slip the face skin on and aline the eye skin /nose/mouth/ect,make sure the face is not to tight on the form ,[use pins to hold skin if needed ] then check for fit around antlers, trim skull bone to fit, then PREFIT the rest of the skin most likely the form will need trimmed.Thats another one for later, good luck
is the measurement you should have taken off of the carcass when you caped it out
Thanks for the quick responses Drew and Buck. I appreciate the people on here that actually answer questions. The Elk was already caped out when I recieved it so it was kinda hard to take measurements terryr.
Mounting an Elk is similar to that of a whitetail deer with the exception that it's in a larger scale. The trickiest application is setting those antlers.
For those of you who want to see how this is done all you have to do is go to my website and scroll down the home page until you come to Mounting a "Record Kentucky Elk". Just click and see the sequence in photo's. Good Luck in mounting that ELK.

I had & 51/4 to 5 1/2 seem to be the average. From front cor of the eye to burr.
I forgot to add to my posting about the eye measurement. On this elk that I have on my website the measurements on it were 4 1/8 inches. That's from the back of the eye to underneath the burr. These measurements were taken immediately before I capped it out and they worked perfectly on mounting it. Check my photo's and you will see the measurements written on the manikin plus setting of the anlters. Good Luck.
