It's always been said that the sequel is never what the original is. The fish guys and Rick Krane have their market sewn up and it would seem that the "rest of us" don't have the interest in our subject matter that they do. So, without any tears, here's the last edition unless someone else would like to take it over.

1. When mounting domestic (game farm) sheep or goats, even after degreasing, oftentimes there's a pungent smell to the hide. What causes this and how can it be eliminated?

2. When you send a bear to the tannery, many of them require that "the claws be wired.) What does this mean and how do you do it?

3. All ruminants have a special skin quality inside the mouth that looks like little fleshy teeth. What is the name of this and what purpose does it serve?

4. What quality do the glass eyes for bears, boars and raccoons share?

5. All newborn mammals are born with what color eye?

6. A bear's bottom lip shares the descriptive name of that of an opossum's and monkey's tail. What term is this and what does it mean?

7. A boar has two pairs of teeth designed for fighting. What are the names of these teeth and can they be used in mounting? Why or why not?

8. Can a hawk, owl, or eagle open their talons while perched? Explain.

9. A "jimmy) and a "sook) are names of the sexes of two animals. What are they and how do you tell the difference?

10.BONUS: Panda bears are special in nature. What physical quality do they have on their front feet that are unique to the animal world?

Final call?
Gosh George...I thought you were doing a great job! Some of it requires a little research but every week you and Rick either jog my memory or help me learn something new and that is what it is all about! I say "Charlie Mike"!
Here is my best shot...good questions...tough!
Thanks...Ken

1. When mounting domestic (game farm) sheep or goats, even after degreasing, oftentimes there's a pungent smell to the hide. What causes this and how can it be eliminated?
Im sure that Lanolin is the culprit of lingering musky odors, but I don't have that problem because I send stuff like that out...sorry...theres only a couple of places I would send something like that to and they have done a fine job in the past, particularly on wool. Al Holmes showed me something that works really well recently for persistent odors...kind of like Febreeze...I guess Febreeze would work too.

2. When you send a bear to the tannery, many of them require that "the claws be wired.) What does this mean and how do you do it?
It means that if you don't do it...it will be missing a few "toenails) when it gets back!.
I drill them out from the back down to the underside and wire them all together...out, over, in, over, out, over...etc...

3. All ruminants have a special skin quality inside the mouth that looks like little fleshy teeth. What is the name of this and what purpose does it serve?
Papillae... they aid in breaking up food material.

4. What quality do the glass eyes for bears, boars and raccoons share?
Im probably going to feel stupid because Im not sure what we are looking for here...round pupil...corneal bulge?

5. All newborn mammals are born with what color eye?
Mammal trivia for $800 Alex...What is...Blue..?

6. A bear's bottom lip shares the descriptive name of that of an opossum's and monkey's tail. What term is this and what does it mean?
Prehensile...grasping and holding

7. A boar has two pairs of teeth designed for fighting. What are the names of these teeth and can they be used in mounting? or why not?
Tusks and whetters. You can use them but they will crack and they will deteriorate

8. Can a hawk, owl, or eagle open their talons while perched? Explain.
I don't know the correct answer but I believe that all raptors instinctively clutch. I don't think that they have the ability to balance themselves on the roost without clutching.

9. A "jimmy) and a "sook) are names of the sexes of two animals. What are they and how do you tell the difference?
I grew up in Pensacola Florida and we used to go out to the Bay Bridge at night and trap these dudes...Blue Crab...a Jimmy is an adult male crab with a narrow pointed lower thorax (apron, belly or whatever)...looks rather "male). A sook is the female with a thorax (ditto) that looks like the Mosque of Umar!

10.BONUS: Panda bears are special in nature. What physical quality do they have on their front feet that are unique to the animal world?
They have an extra "thumb)...or a thumb and 5 fingers.

for what its worth.

George I also think your doing a good job. why give up so soon. ?

Now granted being that this is the beginners forum. Maybe the beginners are just that. Beginning, wanting to learn, or maybe just getting there feet wet. . Maybe some of the questions that are being asked are a bit much for the newbies? lol. heck I don't know I am just giving my opinion. Not being rude or anything of the sort just a guess is all. I say keep it going george.

A Couple Answers

2. I never wire my claws on. The pads are split down the middle and the skinned foot is turned inside out and dried that way. When the hide is about half dry I put a cable tie on the foot to keep it inside out during the tanning process. I send them in with instructions NOT to take the cable ties off. This does mean that I have to clean the saw dust out of the foot then I get it back, but it solves two problems. No lost claws and the claws are never freyed.

10. Pandas have an opposing thumb, like humans, so that they can hold their bamboo.

Good job, Goerge!

1. When mounting domestic (game farm) sheep or goats, even after degreasing, oftentimes there's a pungent smell to the hide. What causes this and how can it be eliminated? I don't know about domestic sheep, but I know antelope have scent glands in the cheeks; maybe sheep do also. I think sending anything to a professional tannery will eliminate smells.

2. When you send a bear to the tannery, many of them require that "the claws be wired.) What does this mean and how do you do it? Have not heard this term--- I would think it would have something to do with tearing the claws out during tumbling?

3. All ruminants have a special skin quality inside the mouth that looks like little fleshy teeth. What is the name of this and what purpose does it serve? Papillae-- used for help in gripping and chewing food--

4. What quality do the glass eyes for bears, boars and raccoons share? I have no idea---round pupils?

5. All newborn mammals are born with what color eye? blue

6. A bear's bottom lip shares the descriptive name of that of an opossum's and monkey's tail. What term is this and what does it mean? prehencil(?) It can grasp and hold things.

7. A boar has two pairs of teeth designed for fighting. What are the names of these teeth and can they be used in mounting? Why or why not? tusks-- I would think that they would be like other real teeth and would eventually crack.

8. Can a hawk, owl, or eagle open their talons while perched? Explain. Apparently, raptors can open and close their talons at will, so yes, but I think they would need to shift weight while perched.

9. A "jimmy) and a "sook) are names of the sexes of two animals. What are they and how do you tell the difference? a sook is an adult female blue crab; a jimmy is a male. The male has a "t" shaped belly apron and the female has a "u" shaped apron. (I had to look them up!)

10.BONUS: Panda bears are special in nature. What physical quality do they have on their front feet that are unique to the animal world?
They have an elongated wrist bone that allows great flexibility to use their unique extra "thumb" in addition to their five normal digits. They can hang onto bamboo easily with this extra thumb. (I looked that up, too!)

Thank you, George. These questions make me think and usually make me do research. Great way to learn.

I just found these (please not the final call)

1. When mounting domestic (game farm) sheep or goats, even after degreasing, oftentimes there's a pungent smell to the hide. What causes this and how can it be eliminated? Ive never mounted a sheep, but I have smelled that smell. I send my stuff to the Wildlfie Gallery and I would hope it came back without that smell, as everything Ive sent them came back with their special smell on it.

2. When you send a bear to the tannery, many of them require that "the claws be wired.) What does this mean and how do you do it? The Wildlife Gallery doesnt require this, but It means to wire them up so that you dont loose the claws during tumbling, I would do it with zip ties I think.

3. All ruminants have a special skin quality inside the mouth that looks like little fleshy teeth. What is the name of this and what purpose does it serve?Papillae, for gripping food and aiding in chewing

4. What quality do the glass eyes for bears, boars and raccoons share?
The same eye can be used for all 3 species.
5. All newborn mammals are born with what color eye?
blue
6. A bear's bottom lip shares the descriptive name of that of an opossum's and monkey's tail. What term is this and what does it mean?
prehensil, can grasp things
7. A boar has two pairs of teeth designed for fighting. What are the names of these teeth and can they be used in mounting? Why or why not?
I dont knwo the teeth name, but they cant be used cuz they will yellow and crack over time
8. Can a hawk, owl, or eagle open their talons while perched? Explain.
I would say that they can on one foot at a time, cuz if they did on both they would loose their balance.
9. A "jimmy) and a "sook) are names of the sexes of two animals. What are they and how do you tell the difference?
No idea
10.BONUS: Panda bears are special in nature. What physical quality do they have on their front feet that are unique to the animal world?
No idea

#8 seems to giving be giving trouble

This response submitted by George on 8/27/06 at 11:25 PM. ( georoof@aol.com ) 205.188.117.65

Where the damned bird brains when you need them. MY answer would be know. The lower leg of all birds has no muscle tissue but rather works on mechanical leverage. When a bird is perched, the knee is bent putting tension on all the tendons in the legs and toes. This clasps the branches or it's kill. The only way to open the foot is to straighten the knee. When you see a bird of prey attack, it extends the legs and just forces the open foot down on the prey. The knees, acting like a shock absorber, bend and lock the talons down in a death grip. I think the same principle is used in prosthetic arms on humans with the cables and pulleys.

Papilla do all that has been said, but they actually keep the food from moving towards the front of the lips. They point backwards to keep food back against the molars for chewing.

I just think my take on this issue is stale. I'm a naturalist, biologist, entomologist, and zoologist of sorts and I'm always amazed and enthralled by the beauty of nature. From the lack of participation, I don't see that interest in others and maybe someone else can cater to the issues better. Maybe it takes a famous taxidermist, and I've never pretended to be one of those but SOMETHING is missing when we don't have more participation than this. I'll defer to someone else.

Don't stop yet!

I think you said once that there are almost never any original questions here. I rarely post, but always read. I even knew a few answers last week. But if you don't have time, maybe someone else will step in, or different people.

1. When mounting domestic (game farm) sheep or goats, even after degreasing, oftentimes there's a pungent smell to the hide. What causes this and how can it be eliminated?
Unneautered male goats reek. For one thing they urinate on themselves. I haven't had to mount one yet, so I don't know what would work.

2. When you send a bear to the tannery, many of them require that "the claws be wired.) What does this mean and how do you do it?
No bears here, but the tannery does not want to lose the claws. I know some ask you to remove them. Wiring would probably mean to tie them in with wires.
3. All ruminants have a special skin quality inside the mouth that looks like little fleshy teeth. What is the name of this and what purpose does it serve?
Papili. Not spelled right. They don't have top teeth and therefore break, rather than cut grass and other vegetation for eating. This was the reason the cattle herders were so adamant against the sheep herders in the old west becasue they tended to destroy grass.
4. What quality do the glass eyes for bears, boars and raccoons share?
I don't know about bears or boars, but the eyes I have used for coons look black, but are really purple.

5. All newborn mammals are born with what color eye?
Blue

6. A bear's bottom lip shares the descriptive name of that of an opossum's and monkey's tail. What term is this and what does it mean?
Prehensile.
7. A boar has two pairs of teeth designed for fighting. What are the names of these teeth and can they be used in mounting? Why or why not?
I don't do pigs! Talk about stinking.
8. Can a hawk, owl, or eagle open their talons while perched? Explain.
They would have to if they use their talons for gripping. Otherwise they would never be able to let go.
9. A "jimmy) and a "sook) are names of the sexes of two animals. What are they and how do you tell the difference?
I have lived in the deep South all my life and have never heard crabs called that. Though I can certainly tell the difference. The females have a much wider and striped plate on their belly. The males is thinner.

10.BONUS: Panda bears are special in nature. What physical quality do they have on their front feet that are unique to the animal world?

> Can a hawk, owl, or eagle open their talons while perched? Explain

Yes. Technically, they shouldn't be able to, because they have shortened tendons in the bottom of the foot which automatically cause the foot to grasp a branch (this is how they hold on while sleeping) by contracting the muscles of the leg. Remember that they are conscious beings, and as such they have voluntary control over their feet. They can override this mechanism. So, when it's time to itch, preen, or leave the perch, they sure can open their feet to do this.

Raptors are just big perching birds. Look at a sparrow. Same foot anatomy - "3 and 1". There are just a few species that are "2 and 2" - woodpeckers and parrots.

George, I agree with Leslie. Even though I don't post answers, I read your questions, read the responses, even do my own research to find the answers, and learn alot the questions you ask. Please don't stop.
