Repainting fish

Submitted by Danielle on 8/13/99. ( thesprouts4@hotmail.com ) 216.178.143.9

I have a fish that I would like to repaint, but don't know how to start. It belonged to my dad's grandfather, and has been in the attic. Dad has been teaching me some, but I want to surprise him with this. Do I need to strip the old paint, or just paint over it? If I paint over it, do I need to paint it white first? Thanks.

Danielle, I personally would strip the fish first. I use Formbys paint stripper. You can get this at most hardware stores. Just follow the directions on the can. Make sure you wash off all residue before you try to repaint. You also might have to recard the fins until the fish dries. This is just the method I use , I'm sure there are others out there with other ideas.Maybe they'll pop in here . Bob C

Danielle you can a good job with this if you start off right. Not knowing what type of paint that was used when the fish was painted, I would wash it with acetone since acetone will cut any type of paint.(wear rubber gloves and do this outdoors)card the fins until the mount is dry. Then seal it with WASCO sealer and rebuild the shrinkage with sculpall..then seal it again. If the fish is dark, lighten it up with a light coat of white...then proceed with your chosen paint schedule.I know your dad will be proud of your efforts and that you will be successful. Let me know how you make out or E-mail me for more help. Good luck JL.
