Keeping records

Submitted by Theresa on 8/20/99. ( Theresa@gloryroad.net ) 12.4.13.108

My husband has just finished school for Taxidermy and we are now setting up shop. His teacher has given him some great ideas on keeping records and I know from reading reading the Taxidermy Today that there also is a computer program out there to assist in this. However that program is very expensive for our just starting out budget. I would like to know if there is something else out there in the computer department to use, that I might possibly change to fit our needs.
Thank you, Theresa

Theresa,
If buy a program is going to stretch you budget, modify the programs on you computer already to fit you needs. Quick Books, Quicken, or Excel work great.
I use Excel and prepare a spread sheet with all the information my tax guy tells me he will look for. I update them each month and give him a hard copy at the end of the year. I keep expenditure, gross receipts, mileage, telephone, electricity, miscellaneous expenditures (office supplies and such), advertising, charitable contributions, and abandoned/unclaimed work. I tailor each one and back them up with hard copy records. At the end of the year, the tax guy uses the spread sheets and tells me what changes I need to make. Then again, that's what I pay him to do and I post it for next years taxes.
