shouldn't need shaving

the rabbit you mounted has probably the thinnest skin of any animal you will ever do, the groundhog skin should be no problem for you
it will be easier to flesh and work with. most small animals don't need shaving just a good thorough fleshing and degreasing.
I do my small mammals on my wire wheel , it works fine for fleshing small mammals.
I hope this helps you ... have a great day!

shaving a deer

when you begin to try shaving the deer I suggest you try it on a cape you don't need ,, so that you have the room for error
what you are trying to do is thin the skin down as thin as possible .
this allows for the least amount of shrinkage and the most detail

to shave it you may want to try a sharp fleshing knife such as trappers use for fleshing on a beam. you may just try a scalpel if you are only doing 1 or 2 deer.. it will be very time consuming but can be done. patience is the key

have a great day!

Send your capes to good commercial tannery don't get involved in the nightmare of thinning and tanning it is just a waste of time for most. Believe me it was like pulling teeth but I learned to trust these fine people.
