Yes it's true borax is used as a preservative. But use only in preserving bird bodies and in some fish formulas. Borax is also in some dry presevatives with other added chemicals that is used on some animal hides.
To use borax:
1-an aid in skinning and fleshing birds, fish, and small game. By using borax while you skin a specimem it soaks up body fluids and you can get a better grip on fish that are a little slippery to handle.
2-Borax is used a preservative after a bird body is properly fleshed (all meat and fat is removed) Then I take some damp borax and rub it all over the skin. Then mount it.
3-Borax is also used in fish formulas.
Hope this helps you.

Borax, The Preservative

Chad, I use borax as a preservative for all mammals i do smaller than a squirrel. It works great and its not dangerous to use. It also keeps bugs away from the mount. It does have some disadvantages such as a lot of shrinkage, but thats why i only use it for small mammals with thin hides. One more thing, I would not recommend you use borax or dry preserve on big animals such as fox, coyote and deer, if you do you will be sorry with the amount of shrinkage.

Good Luck!

Adam
