Polytranspar WA and Aztec airbrush?

Submitted by Mike R on 8/23/99. ( ) 209.117.80.46

I recently started using WA paints and am having a few problems. First, whats the best way to remove it from the hair? It doesnt seem to wipe off like most paints. Second, it doesnt spray very well thru my aztec 470. I tried thinning and retarder and the airbrush system is set up properly (30-35psi....moisture trap....brush and tip clean...etc..). Nothing seems to help! It sprays for a few seconds and then quits! I am using the "general purpose" nozzle. Anyone have similar problems? Any suggestions?
Thanks

Mike I gather that your using Wildlife Artist colors. I to use both. To remove from hair you can use a brass wire brush and comb it out or take some windex on a rag and wipe it off. It takes a little time but works good. Try combing your hair out of the way as much as possible and get you paint brush a little closer to the hide. A lot less cleanup this way.
Now as far as the painting problems with WA you have to make sure that the paint has a little more Retarder in it plus use a couple of drops of the cleaner in the paint mix. It seams to me that there paint is just a little thicker than most and needs a little more retarder and the use of the cleaner in there product.
To make up a mix lets say in a 1/4 oz cup mabey I use 5-8 (sometimes more ) drops of retarder and 4 drops of cleaner. Do not use to much cleaner because it will break down the paint.
Now for the brush. The Gray tip is a great one to use. I can paint the smallest dot to a 3/4" spray if the paint is thinned right. Now here'e what also may be causing some greeve. One is paint is stuck or dryed on the spring in the tip. Pour some cleaner in small container and soak the white part of the unit. You can pull the gray from the spring inclosed case. Do not try and pull out the spring. You do this well just throw away the tip then. Soak the tip in the cleaner over night. Now I take my air hose set at 65psi with a fine blower on it ( the one that is used to clean out car brakes ). Hold on to the tip and blow air through it making sure the paint is removed from the inside of the spring. Resoak for an hour and redo. This helps clean out the dryed up paint that may cause some problems.
Now try and paint again with the thinned out paint. If your still having some troubles after you tryed thining the paint down as best as possible, your tip may be permently damaged and needs to be replaced. Also you may what to try the Blue tip for heavier based paints. Hope this helps. This sould take care of your problems if not let me know.

Dittos to Franks tips. I also keep a hard bristle toothbrush handy when painting to scrub the tip with. Just squirt some windex on it and brush up and down then side to side. this will take the dryed paint off the tip and you will be painting again quickly. Good luck!

best regards, Keith

I to own an Aztec a470 AirBrush and have experienced the same problem on many occassions with many different brands of paint and would agree that the only way around this problem is to keep an lod toothbrush handy to scrub the tip of the Aztec from time to time...
