How long to salt before pickling?

Submitted by Tony on 9/7/99. ( ) 216.229.197.62

This question may be better suited for the tanning category, but I will try it here anyway. I just caped out my first whitetail, split the lips and eyes, inverted the ears and salted. I did this yesterday. I shook off the old salt and resalted this morning before I came to work. My question is, how long do I need to let it sit with this second salting before I can place it in the pickle? Do I need to wait until the cape is dry and stiff? The weather is hot and humid right now in Mississippi and I don't want to take a chance on losing the cape due to the heat.

Thanks,
Tony

Personally I like to dry the hide out. Just keep a fan on the hide to dry it out faster, keep in a cool place. Salt helps keep the hide bacteria or should say kills them. This drying process helps in aiding and setting the hair. I've done this to all my hides and never had slippage do to proper care. After the hide is dried then rehydrate in water and salt. Then I place it in a pickle bath.
But you can place it in a pickle after salting.

Franks way works well.

What method(s) of tanning are you going to use? If you are going to use LIQA-TAN or aluminum sulphate, I would pickle it tomorrow. If your going with LUTAN-F I would do it Franks way. Either way I would use a fan when it comes to the point of drying it. John C

Let it Dry!

I would agree with Frank - setting the hair by drying it first and then rehydrating it is the best way. Its always tempting to skip drying - but its still your best insurance that the hair remains nice and tight. My advice is to let it dry, and then rehydrate it and throw it in the pickle.

Thanks, Frank, John & Bruce!!
