Rug work

I've noticed in my Breakthrough magazine that there are a lot of Wholesale rug businesses. Do a lot of taxidermists mount the game heads and then send these out to be rugged? I know as I get more and more into taxidermy that this seems like a neat way to go if one hasn't the skills involve with this aspect of the business.

Has anyone out there a recommendation on any particular wholesaler?

Jake

More and more people are sending out the rugging part. In many cases it is cheaper for you to send it out than do it yourself.

Why? 1. Is quality, The wholesaler can buy higher quality felt at cheaper prices!!!! They do this all the time and have their systems down. It breaks your routen to stop and do a rug. Plus do you have a sewing machine of that heavy guage to sew leather???? No is most likely the answer so now you have to find someone with one. There are many around your town. Pay them, order felt and backing plus padding and your time to help this cause.

I worked for a shop that was so cheap the tried to do it their self. Bought a good leather sewing machine, but still could not match the quality, and when we got close on quality, the boss would get cheaper materials. Always trying to make a dollar. With over 20 years in this business you can bet I will send mine out!!!!!!! Its easier and cheaper to do it that way. John C

Jake, my advice is for you to rough mount the head and send the rugging out to be done. Finish the headmount when the rug returns so there wont be any damage to your finish work.I used to do all my own rugging and still have the sewing machines that do the work and would sell them cheap. You wont save a dime doing this work yourself. One thing to watch out for is quality. Stay away from anyone who uses hot glue to bind the parts. If you want quality ( I use her exclusively)get in touch with BJ's Rug Making. They advertise in the trade magazines. They do excellent work at reasonable prices and I highly recommend them. Good luck..JL

Jake,
I do exactly what JL does? (No, he didn't teach me. I'm as old and hard headed as he is.) I have tried several over the years and BJ's is as good as you'll find. Unlike several, the edges are machine sewn and bound. If you want a border or if you prefer, like I do, to have the hide look natural, their work is flawless and the have exceptional turn around. John and JL are absolutely right. It's cheaper, usually done better than you can, and allows you to be working on other things. What could be better than that?
