To start out in the field of taxidermy would anyone recommend asking friends and neighbors that hunt to donate their kill even if they are not going to have it mounted? Can this be a way to start training? Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi Mike. That's what I did. It's alot cheaper & easier than buying specimens & if your friends agree to donate them you know that they will be legally harvested. What I did was if they wanted the finished product I only charged them for supplies used. If they were not interested I used them for displays. I politely declined if the specimen my friends wanted mounted were of once in a lifetime trophies, just in case of a disaster in my novice hands. In my opinion this is a good way to start. I'm sure others may disagree about what I charged, but that is what I was comfortable with. Good luck to you & I would highly recommend going through as much of this forum as you can. There is some really good info floating around in it! Steve.

I basically did what steve did,and to be honest it worked out great-i know i saved a bundle of money and my friends now have some nice looking mounts on their walls. And it is a good way to get your work out for the public to see.
Good Luck

Mike,
Make sure you check your state laws.
her in PA you can be GIVEN specimines as long as the animal is
legal and tagged. I make friends sign a paper in case game commision
drops by.
In Pa you need a license to do any work unless its your own, your
dad's, brothers, wifes, sons or daughters. I believe thats about it.
if your game commission has same power as ours they can confiscate
all you equipement if your in the wrong. NOT WORTH IT.
GOOD LUCK!!!!

... Hunter. Mike, I should have also mentioned that I got a Taxidermy/Tanning permit issued by my state (Missouri) before taking in anything. All I had to due was fill out an application & send it, along with $35 to the MDC. It is also required that I keep on file the taker's name, address & phone#. Like Hunter said, check, recheck & then check again how your gamelaws read.
