I just shot a nice drake mallard and want to mount it eventually. I
am not sure how to preserve until I can get to mounting it. What is
the best way to keep it until then?

Eric,
I just wipe off the blood, stuff a little paper towel in the mouth,
double bag in plastic and freeze

Eric-
If you have access to a vacuum packer of some sort(foodsaver,etc)
use it before freezing.These machines will eliminate freezer
burn when used properly- a big plus for bird work or any
small items that it may be a while before you get to.
