methods for soaking white tail legs in salt water

Submitted by scot on 12/6/99. ( ) 4.16.133.213

i knew a man when i was a kid that soaked deer legs in salt water and then fixed them to a peg board to form its shape. Beautiful gun racks. I know that he did not remove anything from inside the leg, just soaked them in saturated salt water. any tips?

That will work, but not sure how long it will hold together. Over time it will probably fall apart on you. I would recommend skinning, tanning and using a comercial form....will last a lifetime that way..........

Scott,
Aside from this type of mount never really looking as good as you may recall, it is an open invitation for dermistids to infest your home and ruin all of your mounts. Taxidermy means "move" the "skin". The way you refer to is simply letting it dry and hope there's no flesh to rot. I learned this way over 40 years ago and I've done me share, but the business has come a long way since then. Listen to Carey.
