RUG

Hi,
I am making a rug and I am almost at the final stage of stretching the hide out to dry. When I take it out of the tanning solution and rinse it off, do I go ahead and stretch it out and put the oil on it or do I wait until the hide is almost dry to apply the oil? Also, what is meant by breaking the hide and what can I use to do that? The last question I have is when I took the hide out of the solution last night, I laid the hide out and noticed that it looked a little "sloppy" on the sides (the area from the front legs to the hind legs). Do you trim the edges and if so, how much? I would greatly appreciate any info anybody has to offer. Thanks for your time.
