Ship first, pay later??

Submitted by Jeff on 12/8/99. ( ) 207.123.128.102

I just started doing work for customers out of state. How do other Taxidermists get paid for their work? I require a 50% deposit but that leaves 50% plus shipping and handling. Do I ship the customers mount first and ask them to send the balance or have them send the payment and then sent their mount? Is there anyway I can ship COD and how do I do this, how much does it cost, and who do I use?
Any info would be appreciated!!!

Ship COD

You can ship COD, USPOffice or UPS. UPS will insure if you take care to crate and box it well. P office will not insure COD. If you ship it with out payment people are going to stiff you.

One studio gets a deposit by credit card and when they start on the mount the get the rest.

Yes the client pays shipping and cod fees. JC

Don't do it! Get paid, in full (including shipping, crating, insurance, etc.) BEFORE you ship If you accept a personal or business check, wait until it clears before you ship, otherwise, get paid with a money order, bank draft, or credit card if you accept them. If you ship COD, mark the tag cash only, but notify the customer that this is the way it's coming so they can have the cash on hand. Incidentally, COD is, in my opinion, the least desireable method. In addition to the shippers already mentioned, RPS, FEDEX, and (freight lines if the work is large) are other otions, Check the yellow pages for locations. Happy Holidays!
