Legal Issues

Submitted by Doug on 12/8/99. ( ecrs@wcnet.net ) 216.88.248.160

I am new to the hobby of mounting birds, and would like to know if it is legal to mount birds that I have taken and display them in a friend's sporting goods store. I was just wondering if I needed my federal permit before doing this. The reason I want to do this is to help him decorate his store, and to make my wife happy by not putting too many birds in the house.

Thanks for the input

Legal Birds

Well first in order to handle or take any migatory bird in to your possesion you have to have your federal permit through Federal Fish And Wildlife Permit(to mount). If you get your federal permit you can display birds as long as the federal tag stays with the bird. And be sure not to sell any migatory bird(just adding in case you didn't know) it's against the law. Unless hand raised. Any other questions will be glad to answer. Give me a call @ (918) 989-5465. You shot the birds, you mounted the birds, you may display the birds, throw them away, give them as a gift.

YOU CANNOT SELL THE BIRDS UNDER ANY CURCUMSTANCE.

Once you put them on disply someone will ask who did them and want you to mount some. Then you better have a lest applied for your permit!!! Good luck John C

Thanks for the help

Thanks for the info. I am getting ready to apply for my permit, I just want to make sure I stay legal. I have only mounted a few birds so far and people seem to be impressed even though I see things I know I should do better on. Who knows, maybe if I get my permit, this hobby might turn into something I can make a little money at.
Thanks again
Doug
