I was thinking about buying a auto tanner and was wondering what the average cost was to tan a deer cape.

I would guess, about $2.50 for chemicals. I think for the small shop its well worth the investment. I dont know where the break point on numbers of hides would be. I do know you can easily do fifty deer capes plus several elk per year. Elk are a bit crowded in the small tanner.
I dont add the oils to the tanner anymore, furs were sticky and hard to clean.
Look at the bigger machine and plan on maybe tanning one week and mounting the next for production work.
Yes it is very cost effective, yes it does tan and very well, and will help you shave your hides too. John C

... My business took off great when word got around that I have a one month turnaround and the job's done right. As John said, don't use the tanning oil. You need degreaser to get the fur clean again. I "Soft Tan" after it's out of the pressure tank, and towel dry. I use a 15 gallon tank tanner, which holds 4 Whitetails, 2 mule, 1 elk, no bear. If they had the 56 gallon tank at first, I'd have bought it first. I cost about $150.00 more (can't imagine why?). Got mine at supply Mike Noonkester Supply for $850, but price around and save about $100.

i am also thinking about buying a auto tanner. i plan on only useing it to tan furbearing animals, coon, fox, coyotes, wolf, bobcat, mink, muskrat etc.these pelts would only be used for wall hangers and rugs a few for full body mounts. i am really worried about getting the pelt soft. what do you guys think? i would be tanning about 300 pelts per year. do you think i would save any money over useing my comerical tanner plus would quality be there. marty mdo3059680@aol.com
