I was turning the inside of a deers ear out. When I got to the very
edge of the skin, where the skin meets the cartiledge the ear split
on me. It split where the inside of the ear meets the back of the ear,
right on the edge. Can you give me any ideas on how to fix it?
Can I so it or is there some type of glue I can buy to fix it? The
split is about 2 1/2 inches long. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I forgot to mention that this is my first deer and i am tanning it with
dry preservative. Will I still be able to glue it using dry preservative.
Thanks.

Brian if you are going to use an earliner don't do anything. I use smooth out as glue on my earliners and if you let a little come out through the edges it will bond the split back together. If you are using bondo sew it, and use LITTLE stiches! Since you are using dry preserve though I am not sure if the epoxy will hold with the earliners. You need to get away from dry preserve. Even though it is your first deer you might as well do it right from the start. If you don't want to home tan send it to a GOOD tannery there are many listed on this forum. Good luck!

Speaking as someone who has some experience at being a dreaded "powder Jockey"
If you are using liners, which I always do, If the hide paste doesn't
hold it, let it dry a little bit and then put some super glue in there.
You have to excuse the judgemental attitudes of some of these guys, Brian.
Practice with what you have and make your own judgements.
Personally, I can make a pretty nice looking head with DP.

small stitches using transparent thread should hold it..
just be careful not to gather the skin as it will cause a thick rough looking edge to the ear :)
I agree with Jim ,, tan the skin
first deer or not you are mistaken if you think Dry preserve is tanning the skin .................
your first mount may also be your future first remount
not being judgemental just telling it as I see it .....

I am still a beginner to taxidermy and have used DP, spray tan and conventional tanning and have had success with all. I have some mounts that were done with DP by other taxidermists and know several taxdermists here in the deep south that use DP and have deer that have been mounted anywhere from 17-28 years and the deer have not cracked or split. The hair is a bit faded, but hair on a tanned cape will fade with time also. I think our climate being so humid year around is what keeps the head from cracking and splitting. Having said that, I am not saying that DP is the way to go, but I do know for a fact that a DP head will last here in the south.
