Is it necessary to tan a cape like you would tan a hide. Do you have to take all of the same steps to get the softness of the cape? Please explain in detail.

Personally i just skip the whole softening process when mounting deer heads, because in my opinion you don't need it to be soft if its gonna dry hard on a manikin, but if i tan hides to put on the wall or whatever then i will do the softening process.
