Getting a correct manikin for my deer

Ok first things first. I just shot a deer(Whitetail Buck). Now I've done some fish taxidermy but never a deer yet. I took the standard measurements. The measurement from tip of nose to front of eye is 7". The measurement from around the Neck(base of skull) is only 14 3/4". Measured about 3" below the first neck measurement it was 15". Now its clear this deer was not in rut because of no swelling. But I would like to have some swelling on this deer. Could any one recommend what size manikin I should go with.(Dont want him to look like super deer). Please respond. Thanks Charlie

Charlie,

I can tell you from experience that an over-sized form will only give you major headaches, and since this
will be your first whitetail mount, it will only cause you problems you want to try to avoid. My advice is
to stick to your measurements and dont try to stretch the cape to fit a bigger form. If you want the deer to
have some swelling, your best bet is to buy a cape with a larger neck. Trust me, if you buy a bigger form and
try to mount it with your cape, you will be creating extra headaches that you dont need.

Good Luck,
Tony

Hey, Thanks TONY for the response, I took notice that some of the supply catalogs have forms for doe. Is it possible for me to use one of these forms, because they are almost the same measurements as my buck. Can you cut a manikins head for the antler base. How far could I strech a skin with out damaging it. If I would use a larger size manikin(like two more inches IN THE NECK)to make a perfect fit. Please respond. Thanks again Chuck

I think you need more catalogs

No really the days are pretty much over when you could not find a form. Look to Joe Coombs, WASCO, McKenzie etc. I don't see and problem finding a form that size, you may have to gice up a half inch in the face. I ordered one for my step sons deer last week. You just have not done your home work. I dont worry about the nose to back of skull numbers, I have not done that one in 15 years. JOhn C
