Bondo............George

George.......Back to the subject of Bondo for ears. Funny thing.....I just had a customer bring in a deer I mounted "10" years ago to touch up. First thing I looked at, was the ears and they still look good(no drumming what-so-ever)!But if I were to compete I,d go with the ear liner for a thinner look. I would have to learn though.Never used them. When I did that deer I was mounting on the side and still in the learning stage. I,ve also got two recapes to do....one is 5 years old with ear liners and pulling apart.......the other one is 11 Y.O. and bondo,d and it is drumming too. Both mounts are obviously poor wokman-ship from the looks of them so that,s about 99% of the problem.. Just a thought to share!.........THANX Tom

Tony, If you want to see "BONDO-EARS IN COMPETITION" take a look at my buck and doe mount on BEN MEARS TAX. SUPPLY ads in the latest issues of BREAKTHTOUGH and Taxidermy Today. I have used both ways, earliners and bondo and lean more toward the bondo method because I am more accustomed to using it. I've never had a problem with bondo "pulling apart". Just another thought to share, Thanks, Eddie B.

Tom,
My good buddy, Bill Yox said it when we first started this on Bondo ears, "no ear will look good if the earliner doesn't fit properly". Bondo may have been easier in some cases, but as you not, they still won't ever be as thin as a good earliner. If you thin it enough to get it right to the edges, then it's strength is lost. Realistically, ears that are 10 years old stand a very good chance of being drummed on any mount. If they weren't fit properly and GUARANTEED if they were DP'ed and didn't fit, THEY WILL BE DRUMMED. Ten years ago, the good epoxies were cost prohibitive and the old carpet glues, dextrin, and latex caulk would not bond the liners to the flesh.

Now Eddie, I'm not going to touch Ben Mears showpiece. I know Ron Carter had a buck on the cover of his catalog some years back that had won a slew of blue ribbons and it was dry preserved. Cameras can do wonderful things. They even make someone as ugly as I am look good once in a while.
