Dry preserve?

Submitted by Tim K. on 12/16/99. ( ) 152.163.189.99

What is the dry preserve method? I have only done one mount of my own before and I had the hide taned. What are the benefits of one from another?

Its a powder for birds.

Its Borax and boric acid, niether of which has anything that repels bug or really preserves hides.

In the south many people use it on gameheads, the draw back is it leave the hide edible for vermin.

Simple to use though, flesh, turn and rub it in and mount. I used it for some years and alway got several heads back that needed repairs. After learning to tan I have not had the problem.

I feel there is a place for in in the shop, but its on birds if any. You wanting the heads you do to last? Then tan them or have them tanned.

Dry preserve

My personal opinion is, don't use it. Either tan the skins yourself or get them done at a tannery. If you'd like a copy of our catalog, visit our web site (guest book) at www.hidebeak.com, or call 1-800-777-7916, Mon-Fri, 9-5 CST, and ask for a copy. Happy Holidays!

Ducky, I have traveled the U.S. a lot

The "IN THE SOUTH" is a true statement more people in the south use dry preseritive than anywhere in the rest of the USA. Sure, Some yankees use but not many.

Since 1995 untill Dec 1998 I travel at lot a tax payer expense. During the down times I would drop in on TAXIDERMY SHOPS. Alot of SOUTHERN SHOP BRAG about dry tanning, when ask the would show me D.P. bins.

I never got into the argruement over the D.P. not being a tan. Their work certainly did show it though, but remmebr these people are still doing mounts full time. As I traveled the northern and western states I found most either tanned or used a tannery on their skins.

So I still stick to the fact that most SOUTHERNERS are STILL USING D.P. I can show you a new tax that did a lot of head last year, guess how needs 60 capes to replace the ones that he dry pres.???? Nothing will take the place of a good tan. Nothing wil last like leather.

Oh and for your info I purchase 40 pounds of D.P. from Touchstone last week, BUT NOT FOR HIDES. JOHN C

Up north at least around here, the only guys I know who use DP are those who desire a quick turn around, and they are willing to cut the corners to get it. Shame on you for getting involved in this one, JC, you know how this stuff follows you...ha ha ha! See ya later, JC...

But the topic will rage on...ha ha!

the question is...

This response submitted by deer woman on 12/16/99. ( ) 152.163.188.3

...why does the south have so many powder jockeys? Theres a bunch using it here in MD, but its equally mixed. Seems as soon as i cross the ol Mason Dixon, tanning is king. Now what in heck acounts for this? Are DP and Confederate flags something that go hand and hand? Is this a classic case of hillbillies, crackers and rednecks? ( want some DP for the ol pickup? Want some with the ol hound dog? Wanna whistle Dixie and throw some DP in?)

Cost of D.P vs. Tanning

This response submitted by Pat Lee on 1/7/00. ( ) 208.157.108.191

For most beginners, like myself, purchasing a hide and mannikin and supplies is expensive enough. Having a hide pro tanned here is expensive. (ie,60.00 for a bobcat). I have tanned some of my own hides but they never are easy to work with afterwards. I find it easier to use dry preservative. So far......no bugs. And by the way I am a Yankee! :-) Who has also lived in the So. for awhile. I think all people are wonderful. I do taxidermy for myself because I love seeing the animals. Maybe someday if I get good enough I can do it for others and then charge them the tannery costs. In the meantime I am sticking with the D.P.

Use Whatever Works Best for You

I have been around tanning, and preserving hides all of my life.
In my opinion DP does just a good a job, as tanning. It all comes down to one thing. Proper hide preparation. As for the response from deer woman, or whatever the hell she calls herself....I am from the South, and damn proud of it. It seems to me that she needs to pick up a little bit of our southern hospitality! Its her type that could give all of us a bad name.
