Well, I cant leave this alone. I am a Southerner, born and bred and proud of it. I dont come on here knocking people from up north and I dont take too kindly to northerners coming on here and knocking me, and while it may not have been directed at any particular person, I still take it personally. But if you want to open a can of worms, I can get just as down and dirty as anyone, when it comes to my heritage. You are proud of yours and I am proud of mine, lets let it go at that.
Now, as for the D.P. I dont know if it is the humidity or what, but a D.P. mount will last many years here in the south, especially in Mississippi. I have several friends who have older mounts that were done using D.P. and they are in excellent condition. One in particular is 23 years old and shows no sign of cracking or anything. Everyone has their own opinion and that is what makes the world so interesting. It would certainly be a boring place if everyone thought the same way and had the same opinions. Not saying D.P. is the best way to do a deer, but dont come on here saying that it will not last and the mount will look like sh$#, because that is not true in my climate, it may be in the northern climate. If you like tanning the cape, then, hey, go for it. I have done them both ways and have had success both ways, so I am not knocking either way and I will continue to use both methods. Not trying to stir up any trouble, just felt someone stepping on my Southern toes!
Later,
Tony

Tony,
I'm a transplanted Southerner myself and I agree totally with your point. In this damned Politically Correct country of ours, you can ridicule people as being "Bubba" or "Redneck", but God help you if you retaliate. I've seen lots of this old world, and I'll tell you, the worst rednecks and bigots don't all live south of the Pennsylvania border.
As for this DP thing, I agree with you also. Tanning is "politically correct" to some degree too. Wonder why there are so many major suppliers down South?

I don't dry preserve but I have seen many successful taxidermists use it for a quality job. The difference I see is in the fleshing. The taxidermists who use dry preserve successfully are the ones who seem to be able to flesh and thin a raw cape clean as a babies behind. I personally cannot, I have a poor fleshing apptitude. I flesh as well as I can within a reasonable time then I dry salt my capes. I use a GOOD tannery to do the thinning and detail fleshing I am so poor at. A very excellent WT taxidermist I know uses liqua-tan on the faces and dry preserves the neck and shoulders. He recently entered a few deer over 8 years old and they still got first place awards. They only took a little fresh paint. I can't use dry preserve, some can. If it works for you or me who cares I don't.

...I judged a show in Kentucky or NC or somewhere, I cant remember. But I can tell you this, there is a guy who used to compete who did pretty well for himself...using dry pres.! I dont care for it, myself, but I can tell you that if I recall correctly, he was within a point or 2 of the best head in there. Would I use it on mammals? Not any more. Is it wrong? Well, sometimes, depends on how its used. Twp things come to mind, though. We are addressing 2 issues that in my mind are already a done deal...the DP debate, and yes, the Civil war. Although Im in NY (sorry to say it) my brother lives in Raliegh. Guess I should toe the line? Ha ha, have fun guys, see yas later.
