Taxidermy Vocabulary

Submitted by Matt on 12/28/99. ( mbuxton@ictransnet.com ) 209.26.104.31

I am funeral director/embalmer and have become interested in
the field of taxidermy. I have read most everything I can
read on these forums, but all the pieces have not come together.
Could someone fill me in on the main terms that you use.
Capes, pickling, fleshing, shaving, ect. I thank you for
your time, and also would like to thank you veterans that
provide your vast knowledge to those of us that are trying
to learn.
Thanks,
Matt

Matt:
In addition to the forum, a lot of books on taxidermy and tanning have glossaries in them. Check them out! If you'd like a copy of our catalog, e-mail, or call us at 1-800-777-7916. Happy New Year!

Im a taxidermist, and am very interested in learning more about the clinical side of what you do, too! Can you help steer me in the right direction? Oh, by the way, fleshing is shaving the thickness off of the hide prior to tanning, or rough fleshing the meat and tissue prior to salting. Pickling is a process covered in depth in the tanning category, check back into the archives. Capes are what we call the shoulder mount portion of a mammal hide. Cant wait to hear back from you on the tips, I dont want to say Im dieing to know, though...
