Cape Problem???

I just caped my first deer and noticed a large dark brown area on the neck area. I thought it may be blood but it definately isnt. It just seems to be on the surface of the skin so I salted the entire cape after splitting the lips, eyes and nose. When I checked it this morning I notice that most of the salt had either fallen off this area or was absorbed into the skin and the rest of the cape was starting to get crusty and still had alot of salt on it. Should I be concerned? I want to send this and another cape to a tannery soon. Also there is a 5 inch cut across the lower brisket where a hunter had arrowed it days before. Will I be able to hide this? How?

Sounds Like A Dry Spot

When a skin lays for a while, with an area of the skin side exposed to the air, it will turn brown and get stiff. Since it's dry, the salt won't stick on that area. The chance of it being good can go either way. Some times the weather is such that this will occur in a day or so, other times it's because the guy left the thing lay around a long time before he brought it in, in the second case, it probably will slip. Just send it in, and hope for the best.
