Decoy Mounts

I was at a sporting goods stor and they had some ducks done in a decoy mount. They use these to show hunters the more common ducks to the area. I looked at the mounts, and the taxidermist took the feet off and and got a really nice flat bottom. The mount sat very well and would look great on the mantle.
What I was wondering was how to get the flat bottom on the mounts. Sand the manikin? Add a flat piece of something to the manikin?
The books I have really do not go into this type of mount.
Thanks for your time and advise
Doug

P.S. I just did may fist flying mount on a Greenwing Teal and I have trouble adjusting the feathers on back, and on the lower neck. Any advise?
