What is the easiest kinda mount to start out with.......fish, foul, or fur? And what would be the easiest species? I would like to get into taxidermy and have no idea on how to get started. Thanks!

Try an antler mount. If you want to make it interesting use the real scalp and tan it.

....that cows seem to be the easiest for beginners, because they're large enough to handle without much trouble. Randy, I'm just kidding!!
Although you've started out on the right track, I mean by stopping by this site, your going to have to understand that some of us have shall I say, a sort of pickled sence of humor, so for God's sake don't take everything to heart. For we have some of the most knowledgable, sharing, and gifted taxidermists here that you will ever have the pleasure of cybering with. Now that you've found this site, check out WASCO's catalog they have some excellent projects, books, and video's for beginners like yourself, and like the previous person said try an antler mount if you'd like something easy to start with or maybe a deer foot rack. Whatever it may be, you'll find everything you need to get started in the WASCO catalog, and from the helpful folks here at this site. But for your own good please check the ARCHIVES before you cause poor Bill Yox to go into vaporlock (sorry bill, had to warn the new fella). Good Luck to you Randy in all your future taxidermy endeavors. Happy fleshing!!

What to start out...

I started doing taxidermy as a kid in New York City, and it was very difficult to acquire wild animals there because most of them were armed! I was fortunate, however, to live near a children's museum, where I was able to acquire a white lab rat for my first mammal, and a pidgeon for my first bird. For your starting projects, I suggest something like a squirrel, dove or grouse, and a fresh water fish like a perch or bass. Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask questions on the taxidermy net. If you'd like a copy of our catalog, visit our web site (guest book) at www.hidebeak.com, or call us at 1-800-777-7916, and ask for one Happy New Year!

Thanks!
