I am just beginning to do whitetail shoulder mounts and I'm
only working on my own heads. I have done 100s of antler
mounts and they look great. My whitetails are looking
pretty good also. Anyway my questin is this. Is a shoulder
mount for a mule deer that much different from the whitetail?
Should I try this or let one of the professionals do him.
My main concern is to have the best mount that I can have,
one that will last past my lifetime because this deer is a
"once in a lifetime muley". What do you think?

Dan is this mule deer one you killed or are u doing it for a customer?
What kind of tan are u using? I'd say there basically the same Muley
might be bigger tho. If your doing it for your self I'd say go for it,
but if its for a customer and its a once in a lifetime,and you don't have
that much experience I proably wouldn't.

Yes they're the same, AND they're different too. My point is really, if you've developed a level of competancy with whitetails, you shouldn't have any problems producing a nice mulie. The procedures are the same, and your reference materials will allow you to see where they differ. Most differences between the two species have already been compensated by the form manufacturer, so just do as you're doing now. Good luck.

Yes, the muley is my own. I'm having the hide tanned at
a tannery. I also am studying sallie's Whitetail and
Mule deer videos and books. Thanks for the input!

use your reference material.
One thing that I can tell you to be aware of is that muley's have a much broader nose and more pronunced ear butts than most whitetails.
