I'm just beginning and am concerned about not getting enough meat out of the head of the Large Mouth Bass. Would it be wise to inject Balmex just to be sure? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Melanie,
About the only area that should need such an injection is the tongue or the bass. I'm hoping you are using a commercial form. If you are, when you insert it into the head, you should see the top tip of the form through the eye holes. If you don't, you need to dig a little deeper. Also, with a cheek spoon you can get all the cheek meat out through the eye. If you get all the bones, cartilege and meat from the head, you will be able to remove the cheek meat from the back. The only tools I use are a pair of curved blade fish shears (tipped inward, you won't cut the skin as easily) and a cheek spoon.
Bass are good fish to start on. They're pretty tough and you can rough them up a little in getting them properly cleaned.
Good luck.

George is pertty correct on these bases. But arre you tanning you fish at all. Not that will correct any meat problems, but it will aid in some type preserving, but not for ever. The question here is how did you learn on how to do fish ? Book or video ? And is there anybody around you wjo can look at your fish before you mount it. As foe cheek meat you should be able to easy cheek for that by pressing on the cheek skin with your finger and be able to feel if there is any meat left. You will fill all bone in the cheek, if not you still have meat left in it.
