FISH

Submitted by Duane on 6/5/99. ( )

I have mounted everything from deer to turkey, but have stayed away from mounting fish for some reason. What species of freshwater fish would be best to start on? I have no problem with the airbrush, I've been using it for years in the art industry. I've watched the videos and I'm ready to tackle fish. Thanks!

Bass seam to be one of the easist fish to start with. Try your luck with this first then move on.

like anything else,

Fish are easy, once you've developed your skills to match the task. While I won't pretend to speak for everyone, I do feel that fish are by far the most challenging subjects to develop proficiancy in. When you consider that there are no feathers or hair to hide anything at all, you'll see the point. After 20 years, I still find myself getting away with little things on gameheads and birds that I just couldn't pull off with a customers fish. Frank is right, if there is an easier fish subject than bass, I haven't discovered it. Like anything else, practice will pay off. You'll likely find that fish will require a bit more practice than other subjects you've worked on.
good luck

Must be because I love to catch them so much but fish are my favorite
too---the challenge draws me in too....plus cost of doing one is cheap
and ya can make some good money on them---a good fish guy is hard to
find,,,I learn something different on every fish I do---Bass are great
starter fish--I would avoid crappie, stripers, whitebass for a while...
scales are a pain in the rear on these fish till ya get a gentle touch..
good luck and enjoy the new aroma in your shop---he he he
