Help Needed With Small Bird Mounts

Submitted by Mike on 6/6/99. ( mzohn@interport.net )

I have been getting small dead birds, such as finches, parakeets, budgees from pet stores and would like to mount them. I have tried skinning a few and its a lot harder than it looks to work with these tiny birds. Is there a method to mount them without skinning them? Maybe just gutting them and preserving what little flesh is left or something like that? I would appreciate any help that this list can provide. Thanks...Mike

Mounting Small Birds

Hey Mike,

I'm not in any way knocking the use of freeze-drying - but small birds are kind of my area of expertise - I've mounted a lot for museums over the years and it's all a matter of getting used to the size of the little buggers. The method is no different for them than for a pheasant - at least the way I do it. You just need to decide if what you want is to learn how to mount them, or just find a convenient way to deal with them. Freeze-drying is a good option if you're looking for less hassle. But learning to mount them yourself is rewarding and a good way to expand your abilities!
