Freeze dry Turkey Heads

Submitted by Brian on 6/11/99. ( )

I'm trying to prepare to do my first turkey breast mount . And was wondering if I use the original head ( freeze dried) Will I still need to paint it ? Or would i be better off buying an prepainted reproduction head?

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks , Brian

Brian, freeze dryheads are awesome if done properly ,but you will still have to paint it.Good luck there is lots of reference on the turkey head for painting.

Brian...sooner or later you'll do your second bird and your third, etc. and you'll only get better as you go. Nothing will look better than a well-done freeze- dried head on your mounts, but sometimes you'll be faced with a client who wants the option of a reproduction head and you should be able to offer both methods. Painting turkey heads can be easy or difficult depending on your ability to use an air brush. As an old-timer I suggest that you purchase a reproduction head and learn to paint "IT". This will allow you to strip the paint several times and start over. When you get the bugs worked out of your paint schedule then paint the real head for your mount.I would suggest that you get a catalog from Buckeye Mannikins and order a set of turkey reference pictures they offer and one of their reproduction heads to practice on.Good luck!!
