Mannikin Prep

I just wanted to know, do you always have to use mannikin prep or can you sand the mannikin enough to take the hide paste without it.Thanks in advance for the input. JK

personal preference

a lot of it is personal preference, but both work,
I like to sand my forms, but it does take longer, and you have to be careful not to ruin any detail. I sand so I can add detail. the Mannikn prep works very well. if you are happy with a form go with the prep.
good luck
Bob

You don't need prep sprays if you sand...

prep sprays were developed to eliminate the sanding phase. I use
prep sprays on some habitat work, but still prefer to sand my mannikins.
Regardless of weither or not you spray or sand, you must make sure you
wipe all the mold release off the mannikin or neither will work effectively.
If i'm not mistaken, one taxidermist even lets his mannikins bake in
the sun for a day or three to oxidize the top layer this has the same
effect as sanding or spraying. It does turn the mannikin to a darker
ochre/orange color (right bill?);

Does sanding take the mold release off or do you need a solvent to get it off.

Thanks JK

Sure do I like laquer thinner, put it on a rag wipe off the form, rasp, or sand, then glue.

Those forms DO get discolored when you leave them out in the sun, but they sand easier, too. I like mannikin prep, especially for some of the larger forms. I usually sand with a stout ruffer so I dont feel the need to splash on the solvents, the sanding takes care of the release and the smooth foam surface. I wasnt even using solvents prior to applying the prep either, but they do suggest you do...
