I am only sixteen years old and would like to learn how to do taxidermy
I figured that a squirrel would be a good place to start. The only problem
is I don't know where to start. Could you give me some advice like how to
tan a squirrel, what exactly you would mount it on, how to stitch it, is there
a certain way to skin it, and any other imprtant info I might need.
THANKS, APPRECIATE ANY HELP I CAN GET.

I would suggest you order a kit or "how to" booklet from one of the many supply companies. Look back on the taxidermy net home page for a list of suppliers. WASCO has some excellent beginners material, call 1-800-334-8012 an ask them for a free catalog. It is loaded with the information you are searching for. Good Luck in your taxidermy adventures.

Exactly, you can get an entire squirrel mount kit there for $12.95. Can't beat that! You will enjoy taxidermy.

Wish I would have started in my teenage years...stick with it..it takes
a while to get the hang of it. Dont get discourage by your first
few mounts....just keep practicing and enjoy yourself...keep us posted
on how it goes.

Brian, videos are a great place to start. In my opinion perhaps a bird such as a pheasant or grouse may be easier to do than a squirrel. With any mammals you have to skin and tan the hide, with birds you are able to skin, clean with dish soap and preserve with dry borax soap. You can mount a bird with alot of the over the counter products this will save you from ordering from a supply catalog, of course once your into it, you'll be hooked. The benefit of starting with birds is that you can buy pigeons fairly cheap to practice your skinning techniques. With squrrels you may have to wait for hunting season to get some practice animals.Anyway e-mail me with any questions, Good Luck!!!!!

Get a WASCO Supply catalog and order the serious sportsman taxidermy for beginners set of 7 books. Its 0nly 19.95 and the information you will get will be worth a lot more than the 20 .00 you spent on the books .Good luck!!

Thanks a lot to all the advice that you guys have gave me. I am going
to order a catolog from WASCO. It just so happens that I have a box of Borax
in my house that I used to dry a pheasant and muskrat hide for tying flies.
I think that squirrel kit will be great too. Thanks again for the help.
