Anybody else have this problem? I`ve done two coons and 6 yotes so far since i got into taxidermy a few months back and one of my buddies wants to buy one of my coyotes mounts. I personally don`t want to get rid of any of them. I`m sure this is just a rookie stage but I need to get over it so i can get some of my money back. I have found that keeping a few of my first fish and comparing them to some of my later fish i get to see the improvements in the quality of my work...I can just hear me now---sorry sir I`m going to have to keep that 12 point buck...he`s just to pretty to get rid of..he he
One thing Yox keeps drilling in my head is to enjoy the art of taxidermy...Hopefully i`ll learn to let some of these mounts go out the door by this fall...I guess right now you could say i`m still just doing taxidermy as a hobby and haven`t really got into the business end of the deal. I guess the best thing too do is start a photo album so I can hold on to a bit of the memories...

Travis; You can do what you want if there is real sentimental value there.BUT Im in this for the money everything I mount is either for a customer or for sale!Only time I wouldnt sell if it is a trophy I harvested. When I do a competion piece or a pice for my showroom they all get a price tag.Rember to charge full price I charge what the speciman is worth before mounting plus my mounting and habitat fee.I have found this stuff sells. If you dont have customer work mount somthing and sell it. It works out just like a customer brought it to you If you have a slack time or want to try a new mount it can create income not cost you money. Happy trails and good luck Jeff

Hey Travis,
Friends are hard to come by. Sell it to your buddy for whatever he thinks is fair. You'll have an appreciative friend (hopefully!) and you'll get to see your mount whenever you visit.
My 2 Cents,
John

I don't know what state your in, but you may want to check with the game department before selling any mount. In VA all licensed taxidermist have a set guideline on what can and can't be sold and the guideline even regulates how much we can sell an item for.I'm not sure without a lawyer if we can legally mount animals to sell at all. Here in VA ,in my area the laws regulating the sale of such animals by anyone (taxidermist or not --seller and buyer alike) is being enforced to the max.We have had many warrants served in the last couple of weeks over people (including pawn shop owners, flea market participants, etc.) selling such items as mounted groudhogs, deerheads, rattlesnake heads, etc. Please check with the proper people to make sure it is legal.

Rob---in ks we can sell mounts so i`m in the clear there...but thanks for the reminder.
Jeff-John--My wife told me today that if i sold them she would kick my butt. She told me I had to keep my first mounts...all 7 of them I guess. he he he. I`ll probably go ahead and sell a pedestal mount to my buddy...He`s got two pope and young bucks he`s had in the freezer for the last 3 years so we are working out a deal on them. I haven`t mounted any deer yet so I told him I`d do both of them but asked if I could keep the first one for myself...and the 2nd one I`ll do at cost for him. The yote mount i`ll probably sell to him for 150 to 170 bucks.
I really think i could sell these pedastal mounts like wildfire around here. I`ll be getting my fur dealers licsense here real soon then i can buy some bobcats and fox to mount...course the wife will make me keep a couple of them too. I`m going to have to build a bigger house...5 deer heads, and 1 5x5 elk pluss all these other critters...I love it...
Does the pedestal mount price sound about right? If I sell him a open mouth I`ll probably charge a little more...Thanks guys

Heres another avenue- just make sure you cover your butt with a disclamer on any animal that might be illegal for some to buy or possess in their states- you know- Mt lions, wolves, or whatever esp. As far as I know from talking to my DNR people , the only mounts i can't sell are deer, black bear and bobcats. Does anyone know if yote mounts are illegal anywhere? I'd find it rediculous if some place does outlaw it.
By the way- i'm making good $$ on eBay.

In Virginia ANY animal or part thereof may not be sold without the proper license (ie taxidermy-with limitations, trapping, fur dealers,Etc).By my interpretation of the law, we cannot legally mount animals just for resale to the general public.I'm sure there is loopholes to get around it, but by the book as it is intended to the best of my knowledge it is illegal.

yep- stupid laws- are the antis behind them not being changed? At least here in MD we can finally sell deer skins.

For what it's worth: why do you do taxidermy? For the money, for the love of nature/wildlife? Do whatever YOU feel comfortable with. I've been in taxidermy for 30 years--mostly as a hobby----something I wanted to do, though there was a time I did it commercially--I have over 150 species represented in my personal collection. Over the years I've sold a few mounts but for the most part I've felt that the only mounts I would consider selling were so bad that I couldn't consider selling them. Yes, I still have the first mount I did--a bobwhite quail that was a road kill and lost all of its tail feathers in the process of being killed. (Ugly but the only first mount I'll ever have!) jerry
