Hello,
I am getting ready to mount my first deer shoulder mount.And I am in need of some help.I am on a small buget and cant aford to get a piece of equipment that is to high in the price range.Is there something tha I might already have that would work well to shave down a hide? and how thin should I shave it?Any ideas,tips,or tricks, would be a really big help

Chad, it won't do the job of a round knife, but it will clean all the excess membrane off, and you can thin some of the thicker areas, just be careful not to grind on one place too long, it will create heat and cook some of the fats still in the skin making them rubbery, go over each spot a few times quickly instead of a slow hard swipe. Most 6" bench grinders with the wire wheel will work O K, but wear goggles since wires will come off the wheel sometimes. Some people actually get real good at thinning this way after enough practice. Keith

On a large dia. piece of PVC pipe, you can drag a razor blade at a 90% angle to the hide and shave it very thin. Its hard but I did over 50 deer one year this way. Once you get the hang of it about 15 minutes will do the average 18-19 inch cap. John c
