Getting all the fat off a boar skin

Submitted by Littlebear on 4/19/99. ( )

I am attempting my first boar mount. I managed to get all the visable fat off the skin but everytime I scraps my fleshing tool across the skin I get lots of fat. Is there a trick to getting this fat off? Will "Greasebuster" do it? I'm afraid to continue with the tanning until all the fat is gone. Also are you supposed to be able to see the ends of each hair shaft or did I BooBoo and cut too thin?

send the hide out for tanning

Hog skins are pretty tough to tan due to this grease factor- I would just as soon send the darn thing out to a professional tanner- they can be tanned in shop, however. There may be a post in the tanning forum regarding boar hide tanning- go take a look.

another vote for the commercial tannery...

Deer woman is right. Send it to a reputable commercial tannery. To
answer your question about the hair roots, Yes you will be able to see
them. they are very deep and run throught the epidermis. They will almost
look like a bird skin or Honey comb along the back. Flesh as much fat
off as you can see, and then salt and resalt the heck out of that ugly
bugger until it is dry. then punch code it, box it and ship it, and
wait for the bill from the tannery. Good luck...

Hate to disagree......

Littlebear, I do ALOT of boars. I find them quite easy to tan. Just flesh the skin well, salt, dry, rehydrate and tan with the EZ100 system, sold by WASCO. One thing I've been doing is using some acid bate in the pickle. This will attack the souluble fat in the skin while in the pickle. Boar skins are tough, dont slip easily and tan very well. I would rather tan a boar cape than a deer cape any day, as long as its allready been fleshed. Dont be afraid to give it a try. If yo have any questions dont hesitate to Email me . Bob C

If tanning's your thing,,

I did misspeak a little on my thread. You really don't NEED
to send the cape to a tannery, But I prefer to. I don't have
time for the mess and quite frankly try to do as little
tanning as possible. If you want to try tanning that cape
yourself, Bob C. and or Bruce Rittle are the men to ask...
Its all yours from here Bob. By the way, Glad to see you
back on line, Haven't seen many posts from you. You still
giving Yoxy a hard time about the fan he was trying to uninstall?

Thanks for the info

I really do like to tan my own hides. I like that start to finish hands on work. I can honestly say "I did that". I don't want to send them to a tannery although they would do a much better job than me I just don't want to have to wait for the hide to come back to continue with my project. Besides, this way I have no one to complain about when there are a few hole in the skin. I know it's all mine:)
I am going to tan the boar myself using the Lutan F system. I just wasn't sure if I was doing it right. Thanks for the info it was helpful and encouraging.
