Liqua-Tan or Profesional-Tan

Submitted by Jamie M on 5/14/99. ( )

I have been doing taxidermy for about 5 years and want to take my work to the next level. I have been doing anywere from 15 to 40 gameheads per year with liqua tan and have had decent luck with it. I want to start entering competions and have thought about using comercially tanned hides. I am self taught and I want to be the best in my area,{Northeast South Dakota}not just another partime powder jockey. THANKS JAMIE

Either is fine

Jamie; either way is fine. One thing I would do if going to use LIQUA_TAN, I would flesh, salt, pickle (ACID PICKLE), shave the skin first. I have had some bad luck several years ago with LIQA-TAN, until I started PICKLING the HIDE. Once you pickle it and nuetralize, the hide will suck up the tanning oils and get really strechy and for giving. I like them this way better than, tanneries. But as you get more work you will have to go to a good tannery. John C

Hi Jamie

I'm glad that you like LIQUA TAN, like John many
people have used Liqua Tan. Joe Coombs used it and had
won a championship with it on a whitetail. Roger Martin
has done many pieces in taxidermy today with it.
In that same issue Mary Coombs also did an Whitetail and
an article on it. You will have another advantage like John
had said you will get plenty of stretch and a wonderful tan
using Liqua Tan. Their are too many people to list who use
Liqua Tan on Championship mounts. The product is very easy to
use and makes it a quick job as you already know. If you
want to send it to a tannery that will tan it with LIQUA TAN
you can send it to EASTER'S MICRO TAN and they will give
you that same great LIQUA TANNED cape doing and exceptional
job. All in all do not be affraid to continue to use LIQUA TAN
on peices that your going to use for shows. For any help
or questions please feel free to call me anytime.303-666-9045

Invest in a tanning machine. It is a lot quicker and does a great
job.
