I have couple of nice mule deer antlers that are weathered, and was wanting to know what the best way to fill in the cracks and stain them.
thanks for all the help. I think this is the best site on the net

Jas, I have done a few without cracks but really weathered. I can tell you that Potassium Permaganate works really good to restore the color. Here is what I recommend. Wear gloves! This stuff goes on purple and if you get it on you, you will have brown spots. Put it on and let it dry. You can then use light coarse sandpaper to buff up the areas which you need to be lighter. Then use a coat of Mop and Glo. When it dries, buff it up and your done. You can also use a light coat of semi-gloss spray. I'm sure that you will get more opinions from the experts, but that's mine. Hope it helps. Donna

Jas,
Donna's answer was right on. If your cracks are too big for the liquid wax to work, I prefer taking blocked bees wax and rubbing the entire antler down. Then scrub/buff the antlers until the wax glosses.

spray with almond krylon once the cracks are filled, then stain as normal as possible. JC
